This Key West inspired 2-story residence overlooks the Indian Rive Lagoon, in beautiful Melbourne Beach. The site presented many challenges during the design process which included a narrow buildable area and restrictions on height. To resolve these issues, we drew inspiration from “shotgun house” architecture which features a long and narrow footprint and the front door leading directly into the living area. The residence is elevated above the adjacent road to provide privacy to the living area located on the front of the house and to take advantage of the river view. The 1st floor features a large Great Room space, adjacent kitchen with pantry, office, and guest bathroom. Detached from the house a 2-car garage, small storage room and pool bath. The Owner’s bedroom and kids’ bedrooms are located on the 2-story. We created a split plan in the narrow residence by locating the stairs, laundry, and the Owner’s walk-in closets between Owner’s and kid’s bedrooms. The Owner’s Suite includes two walk-in closets, en suite bathroom and a large, covered balcony overlooking the river. The 2nd floor of the main house is connected to the hangout room above the garage by a covered bridge. This bridge also acts as a covered walk on the first floor to provide protected access from the garage to the main house on the 1st floor.
